A Medical Mensch

I told my good doctor that I’d heard many people say wonderful things about his father. He beamed, put down his stethoscope and said, “I’ve gotta tell you a story. It was 1953. My father was young, just starting out, covering for other doctors. He gets a call about 3:00 in the morning. The wife is frantic. Her husband is very ill with that year’s flu. So he gets dressed and drives a long drive to Seagate (in Brooklyn). He knocks. She lets him in and he treats the patient. She thanks him and gives him a cup of coffee and asks, ‘How much?’ He tells her, ‘$3.00.’ Immediately, she turns to the bedroom and yells, ‘Irving, we found ourselves a new doctor!’” On the return trip he stopped to have a Nathan’s hotdog.
