The World of Jeffery Eisenmesser
Welcome to America!
I taught at Mark Twain Intermediate School in Brooklyn, a wonderful and exciting place to teach. Many of my students had come to America with their families from all over the world. I gave my traditional Halloween lesson (witch’s hat, scary story) followed by a class discussion about the holiday. A student raised his hand and recounted his family’s experience. On an October 31st, they arrived at Kennedy from Russia. They were expecting to be met by relatives, but things had gotten mixed up. No relatives. They called and were told to take a cab. They did, but were dropped off about half a mile from their destination. As they walked through the streets of Sheepshead Bay, ghosts, goblins, monsters, passed them by. Mother stopped, turned to Father and nervously asked, “Perhaps we should go back to Russia?”
